Course Description
More than one in five Americans have a disability, but almost everyone has a family member or someone they know with a disability. Although the ADA, Section 504, and other laws provide legal protections, the reality of living with disability directly or through the care of another is not legislated. This short course will explore living with disability and maximizing life when disability is part of the experience.
Over time, nearly everyone will encounter disability—either personally or through a loved one, friend, or colleague—and living with disability is one of the most universal of all human experiences. Because humans are unique and distinct, each experience will vary according to personality, circumstance, culture, and other factors. Even so, there are some consistent principles that apply to almost all encounters with disability. This 5-week workshop will focus on three major areas: awareness, advocacy, and action, and suggest ways that all of us can live our best lives side by side with disability. NOTE: This workship is available either in-person on the Frederick campus or online via Zoom.
