Course Description
Students in this 10-week course will learn how to become ethical and effective peer recovery specialists, as they explore the nature, scope, and progression of recovery from mental and behavioral health problems such as substance abuse disorder. Areas of emphasis include ethical responsibility, advocacy, mentoring/education, and recovery/wellness. Classes will consist of pre-recorded content on Peer Recovery Specialist perspectives followed by class conversation, group work, live lectures, and assessments. All students will be asked to spend 5 hours working outside of class collecting information and holding interviews for their final assessment project. This course will provide the training aspect only of the Maryland Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS).

David Brooks
David Brooks, owner/clinical director of Brooks Behavioral Health Services. David is certified in all criminality risk assessments created by the Ohio Risk Assessment System and has created treatment plans for veteran’s court along with drug courts and other problem-solving courts. He uses Criminogenic therapy to treat criminal behaviors that are manifested by substance dependency and mental health issues. David has been involved with criminal justice, mental health, and substance abuse treatment since 2003 and understands what is necessary for an individual to change their thought patterns and belief systems. He teaches clients why and how they started their maladaptive behaviors. He also teaches them how to recognize maladaptive thoughts and how to avoid future relapses. David is also a professor at Mount St. Mary’s University teaching courses in Psychology, Human Services, and Communication.
Dr. Tim Wolfe
Dr. Timothy W Wolfe, Ph.D. is a long-time professor at the Mount who teaches courses in Human Services, Criminal Justice, and Sociology. His areas of expertise include juvenile justice, children and trauma, and restorative justice.
Technical Requirements or Needed Materials
Computer with internet access to Zoom and online learning platform to complete assignments.
Additional Requirement: One year or more of successful recovery.
